John creates options and builds solutions for families with complex life situations. In recognition of the professional contributions he has made to defining and formalizing the process of planning for people with disabilities, John was featured on both the cover and website of Investment News (September 2017). The video is called A Father First, and tells John’s personal and professional story as an illustration of the value that planning can have for families.
The ABLE account became available in Massachusetts this year and John was involved in the rollout and educational webinars with MEFA (Massachusetts Educational Finance Authority), Fidelity Investments, the NDRC (National Disability Resource Center) and the MDSC (Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress).
John is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional (CFP®), a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor (CTFA), Chartered Financial Consultant, and Chartered Life Underwriter. He is a Co- Founder of Special Needs Financial Planning, a specialty practice within Shepherd Financial Partners. John holds an MBA degree from Babson College, an MS from Bentley College, and a BS from Bridgewater State College.
John is co-author of the book The Special Needs Planning Guide: How to Prepare for Every Stage of Your Child’s Life (Brookes Publishing) and is under contract to write a book on Residential Planning for individuals with disabilities. Having served on boards of many advocacy organizations for decades, John currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Arc of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Real Lives Law Advisory Committee and on the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services Statewide Quality Control Council.
John lives in Melrose, MA with his wife Susan and son James, who has Down Syndrome. He enjoys running and biking in his free time and has completed an Ironman race in Lake Placid, NY.
